The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has hit upon a green plan to tackle the 40 tonnes of plastic that the city generates every day. It plans to convert the plastic to oil to prevent it entering the landfill sites.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has been submitted to the government for clearance. Apart from making the city green and free of plastic waste, the project does not entail the MCC investing any money in the project.

All it has to do is identify land for the purpose and lease it to the private concern identified to establish the facility to convert plastic waste to oil, apart from giving it the authorisation to collect the plastic waste. ‘Plastic is a by-product of petroleum, and if you reverse the process, it can be reconverted into petroleum as is being done elsewhere,” said B.K. Suresh Babu, Deputy Commissioner (Development), MCC. He told The Hindu that the proposed project is based on a similar plant functioning at Ambattur in Chennai and it was found to be efficient and working well.
